Local basketball fans were gearing to see what was hyped as “the best basketball to be played in Guyana” by the sports local governing body, the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF), but yesterday Guyanese were greeted with sour words. Vice-president of GABF Michael Burnett sadly stated that due to some stiff financial constraints facing the promotional party; Wild Fire Production, and the GABF, the series which was supposed to feature two overseas female teams and three male teams doing battle with Guyana, will now be narrowed down to a four-team tournament.

Andrew ‘Mr. Dunk’ Ifill is scheduled to return to Guyana in a few days time to join the Guyana national team to compete against the DC Jammers during the Godwin McPherson Memorial Goodwill Series, which will be held from August 18-25. The Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) recently shortlisted a group for players to vie for the 12 coveted places on the national team, which will be known as the President’s XII. However, GABF president. David Patterson, confirmed yesterday that the players now be vying for 11 spots with since Ifill is expected to join the local side. Ifill, who is currently playing in Trinidad and Tobago’s semi-professional league, helped North Ruimveldt to the interward basketball title and easily carted off the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award last year.Read more
